Anthropological Artcraft from Portugal

Galo de Barcelos

The Rooster of Barcelos is the most typical and common artcraft design motive from Portugal and Madeira and also distributed in most artisan stores in Spain.

The "Galo de Barcelos" personality arises from an historic justice parable from 17th century that took place in the Northern Portuguese  town of Barcelos in Braga District of Minho Province. There an already fried rooster on the menu table of a local judge, who before had condemmed a pilgrim from neighbour Spanish Galicia Province to death by hanging, lifted himself up to cockcrow, what brought the judge to think, that his decision might have been erroneous, so that he ran on to stop the execution.

The portuguese rooster ceramic belongs to the personal object collection of the CID Institute Museum patron Mrs. Rosemarie Zanger. The ceramic was acquired by her either in Spain (Catalunya) or Southern France during the 1970ies or a present given later to her
