Anthropological Artcraft and Objects from China

RUYI - Mouse

A wooden miniature that represents a famous personality figure from an ancient chinese folklore tale, told in most different ways.

The sculptured mouse holds a Ruyi Scepter, that in the present depiction seems to be broken or twisted. The RUYI is a ceremonial scepter of good fortune and longevity used by the chinese QUING royalty. For the chinese people the RUYI is a symbol that everything goes well and means translated "according to one´s wishes".

Originally the Ruyi had the function of a backscratcher with which one could reach all body areas out of reach. Commonly the ends of the ruyi are designed as Lingzhi Funghus, Sunflower, Cloud or Lotos and mostly it is carved with Persimmons.

The Ruyi Mouse was explained to CID Institute Museum with the meaning, that the miniature shows the mouse that has stolen the Ruyi Scepter from the King´s Palace, but it broke. The depicted Mouse´s gesture might also mean, that the mouse holds the Ruyi to heal it. The mouse then would represent an anime help force spirit for humans, when believe in good intentions, honesty and sincerity of state administration start to be broken.

Tortoise miniature

The depicted sculptured personalities are a mother turtle that carries her tortoise baby daughter on her carapace meanwhile she sit´s on a bundle knotted together.

Probably the personalities depicted in the miniature make reference to an ancient chinese folklore tale that includes the thematic of migration of an mother with her child when having lost their father respectively husband. The knotted bundle might refer to their travel luggage or symbolize the burial of their dead familiy member.
